Instantly vs Smartlead: which cold email platform to use.
Every plan, limit and price, read from each vendor's own pages on 29 September 2026: sending limits, warmup, AI reply automation, API access, integrations, security and support.

Instantly and Smartlead both send cold email through a rotating pool of mailboxes with built-in warmup, and both are tools Salestruct's outbound builds use. Where they differ is the pricing structure, how AI handles replies, what the API will let you do, and which CRMs get a native connection instead of a workaround. This page compares both from each vendor's own pricing pages, help centres and developer documentation, read today.
The short version
- Instantly sells three separate pricing tracks (Outreach-only, Bundle with a lead database, Credits-only for enrichment) starting at $47/month. Smartlead sells one track, four plans, starting at $39/month, with unlimited email accounts on every tier.
- Instantly's AI Reply Agent has an Autopilot mode that sends most replies without a review step, on Hyper Growth plans ($97/month) and above; Instantly's own FAQ says it still pauses for a person when it's missing information, the context is unclear, or it isn't confident. Smartlead's Reply Agent, per its own setup guide, only drafts: every reply currently needs a person to review and click send, and auto-send is listed as "coming soon."
- Smartlead's own integrations page describes its Salesforce sync as native and bidirectional; Pipedrive is listed as a native integration but without that "bidirectional" wording. Instantly's Salesforce and HubSpot sync runs through a third-party partner, OutboundSync, using Instantly's webhook feature, and neither CRM appears on Instantly's own marketplace listing.
- Instantly's API rate limit is 6,000 requests a minute for the whole workspace, on every plan. Smartlead's is 60 requests a minute on its Standard tier and 120 on Pro, plus separate 10-requests-per-60-seconds caps on several individual endpoints.
- Instantly's own LinkedIn post says it passed a SOC 2 examination. We read Smartlead's own Data Processing Agreement page and found no SOC 2 or ISO claim there, so that one is marked not published rather than assumed absent.
How this comparison was made
Every figure below was read on 29 September 2026 from a page the vendor publishes itself: pricing pages, help-centre articles, developer documentation and, where a vendor's own pages didn't state something, the vendor's own public social posts. Each block links the documents it came from, and the full list is at the bottom.
Salestruct isn't a partner, reseller or affiliate of either company. We build outbound systems on both, which is why this is written around what a sender actually configures rather than around a feature count.
Four things to know before you read the numbers:
- Prices are in US dollars, as shown on both pricing pages to a visitor without a region set.
- Instantly sells three pricing tracks, not one: Outreach-only plans (sending and warmup, no lead database), Bundle plans (sending plus the Instantly lead database and AI agents), and Credits-only plans (the lead database alone). This page compares Outreach-only against Smartlead's plans as the closest like-for-like, and covers the Bundle and Credits tracks separately.
- "Not published" means we looked and the vendor doesn't say. It's a finding, not a gap we forgot to fill.
- Logos. Instantly and Smartlead names and logos are trademarks of their owners, shown only to identify the products. No affiliation or endorsement is implied.
What's the difference between Instantly and Smartlead?
Both products do the same core job: connect a pool of mailboxes, warm them up automatically, rotate sends across them inside a campaign, and give you one inbox to manage replies from. Neither runs without a real sales process behind it. An inbox full of replies from either tool still needs somewhere to go.
The differences start below that core. Instantly splits its business into a sending product, a 450M+ record B2B lead database, and AI agents that write outreach and handle replies, and prices each piece separately or bundled. Smartlead prices sending as one thing, includes unlimited mailboxes on every plan, and leans on a wide native integrations list rather than a built-in lead database. That split shapes almost every row below: Instantly's numbers are more complete for a team that wants sourcing, sending and AI in one bill; Smartlead's are simpler for a team that already sources leads elsewhere and wants one predictable sending price.
How much does Instantly cost compared to Smartlead?
| Tier | Instantly (Outreach-only) | Smartlead |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Growth, $47/mo ($37.6/mo annual). Unlimited email accounts and warmup, 1,000 uploaded contacts, 5,000 emails a month, chat support | Base, $39/mo ($32.5/mo annual). Unlimited email accounts, 2,000 verified leads, 6,000 sends a month |
| Mid | Hypergrowth, $97/mo ($77.6/mo annual). 25,000 uploaded contacts, 125,000 emails a month, premium live support | Pro, $94/mo ($78.3/mo annual). 30,000 verified leads, 90,000 sends a month |
| Upper | Light Speed, $358/mo ($286.3/mo annual). 100,000 uploaded contacts, 500,000 emails a month, SISR dedicated IP system | Unlimited Smart, $174/mo ($144.5/mo annual, Smartlead's most-popular tier). 50,000 verified leads, 150,000 sends a month |
| Highest published, non-custom | Not published as a fourth self-serve tier | Unlimited Prime, $379/mo ($314.6/mo annual). 170,000 verified leads, 500,000 sends a month |
| Enterprise | Custom. Everything in Light Speed plus 500,000+ emails, 100,000+ contacts, a dedicated account manager, a shared Slack channel, and a private deliverability network | Not published as a named enterprise tier in the pages we read |
Instantly also sells a Bundle track that adds its lead database and AI agents on top of sending: Starter at $94/mo ($85/mo annual) includes 5,000 emails a month, 1,000 uploaded contacts, 1,500 Instantly credits a month, the 450M+ B2B lead database and the AI Sales Agent. Scale at $194/mo ($175/mo annual, Instantly's most-popular tier) adds 100,000 emails a month, 25,000 uploaded contacts, 5,000 credits, the AI Reply Agent and premium live support. Agency at $555/mo ($500/mo annual) adds 500,000 emails a month, 100,000 uploaded contacts, 10,000 credits and the SISR dedicated-infrastructure system. A third, Credits-only track sells the lead database and enrichment on its own, from $47/mo for 1,500 to 2,000 credits up to a custom Enterprise Credits tier above 200,000.
Smartlead sells add-ons on top of any plan rather than separate tracks: a whitelabel workspace for $29/month per client (available from Pro up, and Unlimited Prime already includes three client workspaces), mailbox provisioning through four listed partners, Zapmail, InfraInbox, Mailreef and AeroSend, from $13 to $19 per domain a year plus $3.99 to $9 per mailbox a month, a SmartDelivery placement-testing add-on from $49/mo, and SmartServers, dedicated sending infrastructure, from $39 per server a month starting on the Pro plan.

Does Instantly or Smartlead's AI send replies without a person checking them?
Yes for Instantly, on the right plan; not yet for Smartlead, on any plan. That's the sharpest, most checkable difference between the two products today.
Both tools draft AI replies inside a shared inbox: Instantly's AI Reply Agent reads the incoming email, drafts a reply, can handle objections, send follow-ups, share a calendar link and update CRM status. Smartlead's Reply Agent (part of what Smartlead calls SmartAgents) drafts a context-aware reply toward a goal you pick: book a meeting, re-engage, qualify or close.
Where they diverge is what happens after the draft exists. Instantly's own setup guide names two modes: Human-In-The-Loop, where you approve every reply before it sends, and Autopilot, where "the agent replies to everything instantly, no approval needed," available only on Hyper Growth Email Outreach plans and above. Instantly's own FAQ for the feature qualifies that: Autopilot "pauses and requests review" when product information is missing, the context is unclear, or the agent isn't confident in its response, so the no-approval framing holds for the replies it's confident about, not literally every reply. Smartlead's own setup guide for Reply Agent says the opposite for every plan today: "Manual mode: Replies are generated automatically but require manual review and sending," and lists "Auto-send (coming soon)" under a heading that says exactly that, coming soon.

What are the Instantly and Smartlead API rate limits?
Instantly publishes one number for every plan: 100 requests a second and 6,000 a minute, shared across API v1 and v2, for the entire workspace, even if you're using more than one API key. Exceed either figure and requests fail with a 429 status code.
Smartlead's own developer guide sets a lower default and ties it to a support tier: Standard is 60 requests a minute, 1,000 an hour, with a burst allowance of 10 a second; Pro raises that to 120 a minute, 3,000 an hour, 20 a second; Enterprise is custom. On top of that plan-wide number, several individual read endpoints (lead statistics, the all-leads activity feed, mailbox health metrics) carry their own 10-requests-per-60-seconds cap per account, which stacks on top of the plan limit rather than replacing it. An over-limit call returns plain-text "429 Too Many Requests," with no Retry-After or rate-limit headers in what we read.

Where each one is weaker
Every product loses somewhere. These are the limits each vendor's own pages show, stated with the same weight as the strengths above.
Instantly's weak points
- CRM sync isn't native for Salesforce or HubSpot. Both run through OutboundSync, a third-party partner, using Instantly's webhook feature, and Pipedrive doesn't appear on Instantly's own marketplace page at all.
- Pricing is split across three tracks (Outreach-only, Bundle, Credits-only), so "how much does Instantly cost" is a three-part question rather than one number.
- Autopilot reply sending, the feature that skips a review step on the replies it's confident about, is gated to Hyper Growth ($97/mo) and above. A Growth-plan user only gets the manual-review mode.
- AI replies cost credits per generation regardless of whether the draft gets used, sent or edited, a cost that compounds independent of email volume.
- The SOC 2 claim we found lives on a LinkedIn post, not, as far as we could find, a published trust page carrying the report or a badge.
- API rate limiting is coarser: one workspace-wide ceiling with no published per-endpoint detail, against Smartlead's more granular (if lower) published limits.
Smartlead's weak points
- No fully automatic reply mode exists yet on any plan. Every AI-drafted reply needs a person to review and send it, and Smartlead's own setup guide lists auto-send as "coming soon."
- Its published API rate limits are lower out of the box: 60 requests a minute on Standard against Instantly's 6,000 a minute for every plan, plus further 10-requests-per-60-seconds caps on some read endpoints.
- No independent security certification claim was found on the pages we checked; the DPA page had no SOC 2 or ISO mention.
- No published support-tier ladder the way Instantly publishes Chat vs. Premium Live vs. Dedicated Account Manager.
- No built-in lead database. Sourcing and enrichment depend on connected tools like Clay or Anymail Finder rather than something native, which is what Instantly's Bundle and Credits tracks sell directly.
- Dedicated sending infrastructure (SmartServers) is a further add-on starting at $39 per server a month, where Instantly folds the equivalent (SISR) into its Light Speed and Agency plans.
Instantly or Smartlead: which should you choose?
Choose by the situation you're in, not by the longer feature list. Here's how the evidence above falls for the most common ones.
| If your team... | Lean towards | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Wants AI replies sent without a review step, today | Instantly, Hyper Growth or above | Autopilot mode exists now and self-gates to human review when it's unsure. Smartlead's auto-send is "coming soon," not shipped |
| Runs deals through Salesforce or Pipedrive and wants sync to just work | Smartlead | Native bidirectional Salesforce sync and a native Pipedrive integration, both listed on Smartlead's own integrations page |
| Is hitting rate limits from a script, CRM sync or integration | Instantly | 6,000 requests a minute workspace-wide on every plan, against Smartlead's 60 to 120 a minute by tier |
| Wants one simple price with unlimited mailboxes and no separate credits track | Smartlead | One pricing track, unlimited email accounts on every plan, from $39/month |
| Wants a built-in B2B lead database alongside sending | Instantly, a Bundle plan | 450M+ record database and the AI Sales Agent, bundled from $94/month |
| Resells outbound to clients and wants a whitelabel option | Smartlead, Pro and up | $29/month whitelabel add-on; Unlimited Prime already includes 3 client workspaces |
| Wants a documented security certification before signing | Instantly, with the caveat that we could only confirm it via a company LinkedIn post, not a trust page | Smartlead's own DPA page carried no SOC 2 or ISO claim in what we read |
| Wants dedicated sending infrastructure without a separate add-on line | Instantly, Light Speed or Agency Bundle | SISR is included at $358/mo and $555/mo. Smartlead's SmartServers is a further $39 per server a month |
If the table points both ways, the underlying question is usually whether the mailboxes you're about to warm up are pointed at a process that can act on the replies fast. Neither tool fixes that.
